Silene laciniata - 'Scarlet Indian-Pink,' 'Fringed Indian-Pink.' - This native of California coastal mountains and foothills makes the transition to garden culture with the utmost grace, performing equally well in the dry native garden and the watered garden bed. Many lovely scarlet flowers are borne at the end of 2'-3' long lax stems for a long season. These are very attractive to hummingbirds.
From a fleshy rootstock and a low mound of foliage arise a succession of flower stems, and although it is fairly drought tolerant, it will flower longer and more profusely with summer water. Partly shaded conditions and well-drained soil suit it best, and it will take winter lows of at least 15ºF. Due to the airy and long nature of the flower stems, it will do quite well placed in the partial shade of small shrubs, where it will send flowers stems out and through the framework of the shrub in a very beautiful way.
