Satureja douglasii - Lamiaceae -'Yerba Buena.' - The huge difference in how easy this plant is to grow and how difficult it is to propagate for sale means that it has been five years since I started growing this plant for sale. I am perhaps a bit premature i offering them still, but I can wait no longer. I will only have a few of these for sale this year.

Did you know the original name for San Francisco was Yerba Buena? The original site was once abundantly graced with the herb.

This California native is a member of the Mint family, and this shows in its wonderful sweet minty aroma which is very yummy in teas. It is a trailing subshrub with a somewhat woody base. It sends out long trailing stems to 6' long in the late winter and early spring and then stops growing and stays perfectly green throughout the dry summer months. In garden conditions with infrequent deep watering, this plant continues to grow through the summer. It is tolerant of very sandy soil and drought but doesn't need these to thrive. Recommendations for success are well drained soil, moist in springtime but with a summer break from watering, and shade in hot summer climates. It is hardy to at least 10 °F and maybe lower.
