Dudleya farinosa - Crassulaceae - 'Chalk Lettuce,' 'Powdery Dudleya,' 'North Coast Dudleya.' - Native to sea bluffs in Northern California and Southern Oregon, this is the northernmost species of this Californian succulent genus, thriving in some areas with over 80 inches of winter rain! Chalk Lettuce is a long-lived, branching caudex-former that grows into a multi-headed plant with whitish blue rosettes of succulent leaves and 1'-3' tall long-flowering stalks with tightly packed yellow flowers. Easily grown outdoors or in pots, where its geometrically appealing form and cool-blue leaves looks great in glazed ceramic pots.
This species is frost hardy to brief drops to the low 20º's, and does well in heavy rainfall as long as the soil is very well-drained and there is a rest from this rainfall a few months in the year. On the cool coast, this is best in the summer, in hot summer areas, a winter rest from watering can work too. For full sun in the fog belt, or partial shade further inland.
