Datura meteloides - Solanaceae - ‘Sacred Datura,' 'Jimson Weed,' 'Toloache,' Datura wrightii. – This is an amazing native of Southern California, the deep roots somehow tapping into subsurface moisture to create a lush blue green mound with tropical looking 6" long purple-tinged white trumpet flowers when all around is sun baked and dormant. It is also an effective hanging basket plant and ornamental perennial. It is notorious for its medicinal properties, but its high toxicity would strongly recommend against ingesting any part of this plant.
Hardy to cold and heat as well as extreme aridity, the key to getting this plant to persist year after year in ordinary garden conditions is to provide a dry dormancy of at least 2 months where the plant will completely die back to the succulent rootstock. This is best done in the fall or winter. It can also be grown as a vigorous annual. It grows wider than tall, reaching 3' in height and 5' in spread. It will also dangle or sprawl down slopes and wall or out of hanging baskets.
