Arnica chamissonis –Asteraceae (Compositae) - ‘Sierra Arnica,' 'Garden Arnica.' - Anyone who has tried to grow Arnica montana in low-elevation gardens knows how difficult it can be. 'Sierra Arnica' is an easily grown Arnica for the garden, which is a much better choice than the 'official' A. montana for those hoping to grow their own Arnica for the all-important fresh herb required for preparations. After testing revealed that all species of Arnica contained the same active constituents, Johnny's Selected Seeds instituted a garden testing program of several species native to the Pacific Northwest. A. chamissonis outperformed them all in ordinary garden situations, and its high mountain habitat guarantees a very hardy plant as well.
A non-aggressive rhizomatous herbaceous perennial , it will make a nice dense patch with flowers rising to 1 foot high above it. This likes a moist rich soil. A native to high mountains, it is hardy to well below 0ºF.
